Sahara Discoveries

The Djanet Region – Tassili N'Ajjer

Djanet is a small town located 2300 km southeast of the capital Algiers, at an altitude of 1050 m. As the capital of Tassili N'Ajjer, it is primarily inhabited by the Tuareg. The town is renowned for its beautiful oasis and its surroundings, which are brimming with discoveries: stunning sand dunes, ancient rock art with engravings and paintings, and magnificent sandstone formations sculpted by the wind. The sunsets here are especially magical.

Tamanrasset – The Hoggar Mountains

Tamanrasset is a city located 2000 km south of the capital Algiers, at an altitude of 1400 m. This elevation gives it a uniquely special climate compared to other regions of Algeria, as well as an interesting geographic position. As the capital of the Hoggar Mountains, Tamanrasset is home to the highest peak in Algeria. The region is characterized by its vast mountain range with basaltic and granitic foundations, and is a land of extinct volcanoes that date back around 400,000 years. Tamanrasset is also fascinating for its history, and its unique character lies in its highly diverse human population.

Rock Art of the Sahara

The millennia-old rock paintings and engravings of the Sahara are fascinating testimonies to the daily life of ancient times. This prehistoric art vividly depicts scenes that reflect the life of the era. Some illustrations feature aquatic animals, hinting at a time when this desert region still had bodies of water. Other engravings depict domesticated animals, providing insights into the early use and keeping of animals. These impressive rock artworks offer a unique glimpse into the history and cultural development of humanity in this region.
